I officially entered my third trimester recently, and I don’t think it fully hit me until someone asked, “So… are you ready?”
My first thought was, ready for what?
Ready for labour?
Ready to become someone’s mom?
Ready for sleepless nights?
Ready to install the car seat?
The closer I get to meeting our baby, the more I realize that “ready” isn’t a finish line you suddenly reach. It’s something that happens little by little, one appointment, one decision, and one tiny baby outfit at a time.
The third trimester feels different already—not just physically, but mentally too.
It Suddenly Feels Real
For most of my pregnancy, everything felt exciting but still a little abstract.
I was planning, researching, and imagining what life would look like, but there was always this feeling that we had plenty of time.
Now that I’m in the third trimester, the countdown suddenly feels much shorter.
People have stopped asking how I’m feeling and started asking if the nursery is finished. Family members want to know if we’ve packed our hospital bags. Friends ask whether we’ve installed the car seat yet.
It’s exciting, but it’s also a reminder that this huge life change is getting very close.
My Body Is Asking Me to Slow Down
One thing I’ve noticed already is that my body is making the decisions for me sometimes.
If I overdo it one day, I feel it the next.
Simple things like carrying laundry upstairs, standing in the kitchen for too long, or spending hours running errands leave me more tired than they used to.
It’s a reminder that preparing for a baby isn’t just about checking things off a list.
Part of preparing is actually taking care of myself too.
I’m trying to listen when my body tells me to sit down, drink more water, or leave something for tomorrow.
That’s not always easy for me, but I’m learning that rest is productive right now.
My To-Do List Is Getting Shorter (On Purpose)
A few months ago, I had pages of baby-related tasks.
- Research a stroller.
- Compare car seats.
- Start a registry.
- Think about feeding.
- Read about safe sleep.
Now, those big decisions have mostly been made.
Instead of constantly researching, my focus has shifted toward finishing small things.
- Washing baby clothes.
- Organizing the nursery.
- Prepping a few freezer meals.
- Packing a hospital bag.
They’re smaller tasks, but they make everything feel more tangible.
I’m Trying Not to Rush This Season
I’ll admit, there have been moments where I’ve looked around our house and thought, There is still so much to do.
But then I remind myself that babies don’t need perfection.
They need parents who love them.
The internet makes it feel like you need every drawer perfectly labeled and every possible situation planned for before your baby arrives.
The more I prepare, the more I realize that’s probably not realistic.
There will always be something I could organize better or another product someone recommends.
At some point, you have to trust that you’ve done enough.
What I’m Focusing on Before Baby Arrives
Rather than trying to “finish everything,” I’ve narrowed my priorities to a few things that genuinely matter.
I want our home to feel calm and functional.
I want to have the basics ready without filling every closet with things we may never use.
I want to spend time with my husband before our lives change in such a big way.
I want to rest without feeling guilty.
And maybe most importantly, I want to enjoy these last few weeks of pregnancy instead of rushing through them trying to be perfectly prepared.
The Emotional Side of the Third Trimester
I expected the physical changes.
I didn’t expect how emotional this stage would feel.
Sometimes I’m incredibly excited. Sometimes I feel nervous. Sometimes it still doesn’t feel real that in a few weeks there will actually be a baby here.
I think all of those emotions can exist together.
And maybe that’s one of the biggest lessons pregnancy has taught me.
You don’t have to feel one thing all the time. You can be grateful and overwhelmed. Excited and nervous. Ready and completely unsure.
Final Thoughts
If there’s one thing I’m taking into the third trimester, it’s this:
I don’t want to spend these last few months chasing perfection.
I want to spend them preparing thoughtfully, slowing down when I need to, and appreciating this season for what it is.
There will always be one more thing to buy or one more article to read. But these weeks are also the last chapter before we meet our baby. And I don’t want to be so busy preparing for motherhood that I forget to experience this part of the journey too.
